IU Celebrate Excellence of Achievement in Academics, Arts and Athletics

A Weeklong Salute: October 13-21, 2007

Entertainment

Whether it’s opera or jazz, modern dance or ballet, Greek tragedy or the latest Broadway show, Indiana University has something for everyone. This week was no exception, with performances by the hilarious author and radio contributor David Sedaris and jazz great David Baker, as well as many other Jacobs School of Music performances. We also welcomed rock legends Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello at the Homecoming concert at Assembly Hall on October 19, 2007.

The Jacobs School of Music is honored to perform its role in the inauguration of the 18th president of Indiana University with a variety of concerts that reveal the strength of IU’s place in the international cultural world. We join the university community, Indiana, and the world of higher education in celebrating the appointment of Michael A. McRobbie as our new president.”
— Gwyn Richards, dean of the IU Jacobs School of Music

As plans for Celebrate IU started coming together, even I was pleasantly surprised at the wealth of performances that will take place in the space of a week. We're accustomed to outstanding offerings from the Jacobs School of Music, great shows in the IU Auditorium, and beautiful exhibits in our galleries and libraries, but I think we've outdone ourselves this time, and I think it's going to be a terrific week.”
— Stephen L. Ferguson, president of the IU Board of Trustees

Music of all sorts

The Jacobs School of Music played a major role in the weeklong celebration with a variety of concerts. The inauguration ceremony included two celebratory fanfares composed by Professor of Music David Dzubay and performances by his faculty colleagues Sylvia McNair and Christopher Young and the IU Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Professor of Music David Effron.
